Christina Bradbury – Home Manager

Lyndale

15 bed residential home, catering for predominantly younger adults (under 65), with mental health diagnosis.

Lyndale offers a safe and homely environment, for persons with some complexity, and a mental health diagnosis and/or associated learning disabilities.

We use both Enablement and Recovery models to assist people in regaining independence or maintaining the independence they have, for as long as possible. Our ethos is about ‘doing with’ not ‘doing for’

The Home has two ground floor, en-suite, bedrooms and a self-contained flat, with the remaining 12 bedrooms on the first and second floors.

Our home is situated in the picturesque town of Tavistock, just a short walk from local amenities. The local park, provides an easily accessible recreational area, with large green spaces, a canal, sensory garden, and leisure centre facilities. Regular diverse events, such as community food festivals, pop-up markets, its many café’s, restaurants, and quaint independent shops, provide many opportunities for engagement with our community, offering enrichment to the lives of people we support.

Our Commitment:

Mental Health Recovery with a person-centred focus aiming to promote:

  • Independence through better management of Activities of Daily Living
  • Health and Well-Being
  • Social Awareness and the rights of others
  • Multidisciplinary Team Support, whilst making the Service User an essential and valued contributor

Our approach

We work within a positive environment to build skills and confidence, and also to bring structure, inclusion and opportunity into the lives of people, matching support to their abilities, interests and needs.

Lyndale promotes social inclusion with various activities, including positive safety management and risk reduction strategies. The people we support have individualised recovery plans and a dedicated key worker to support them through their care pathway.

We have a strong person-centred ethos and have taken the things that people have told us are important to them to develop our own PBS quality standards, working in partnership with Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) to equip our staff with the skills and confidence to recognise, respond to, and wherever possible, prevent escalating behaviours

Therapeutic Activities

Lyndale promotes a number of therapeutic activities to help people meet their individual needs and aspirations.

Therapeutic activities to build skills for independence include:

  • Activities of Daily Living: Personal care, money management, medication and its compliance, and personal safety; Use of public transport.
  • Communication and Discussion groups: Developing social skills and social awareness of the rights of others
  • Health and Well-Being: Giving increased self-esteem, self-awareness and self-respect, enabling a sense of belonging – ‘being ‘settled’; Making healthy lifestyle choices
  • Engagement with Education and Employment
  • Community Involvement: Building links with visits to friends, family, and within the community
  • Positive Social and Leisure Activities: Gardening; Music appreciation; Arts and Crafts

Pathways

We aim to help all the people we support to reach a point in their lives where they can enjoy the same freedom, opportunities, and everyday pleasures that most people take for granted.

Whilst some of the people we care for will be supported by Lyndale as a long-term placement, Lyndale also has established a clear, proven pathway for people with enduring mental health conditions to progress from full residential care to living more independently within the community. The self-contained flat is part of our recovery pathway towards independent living that allows people to gain confidence and in a structured supported and managed way. We also aim to minimise the risk of relapse and re-admission by adopting the recovery model approach.

We work in partnership with Local Commissioning Groups to ensure that progress along the recovery pathway is supported at every stage.

Support services

We are experienced in tailoring support for people with mental health conditions on their path to recovery. We work with each person to identify and define their goals, to ensure we have a breadth of understanding of their life and aspirations so that we can plan and agree support activities with them.
